What is a School Fees Loan?

This is a digital loan product, powered by Furaha, that allows eligible customers to access school fees through the Mobile App or USSD platforms.

The funds are disbursed directly to student codes, ensuring secure and targeted payment to educational institutions.

Customers can access the service by dialing *165*80# and selecting School Fees Loan from the menu.

Key product features include:
  • Processing Fee: Applied on disbursed amount at the rate of 3% on App Account and 5% on USSD Account. USSD Account is converted to App Account when USSD user successfully completes Mobile App registration
  • Interest Rate: 5% per month
  • Repayment Period: 3 months, with flexible weekly or monthly instalment options
  • Penalty: 5% on the overdue instalment amount

How do I sign up on the Furaha App?

Follow these simple steps to sign up on the Furaha App;
  1. Download Furaha App from the Google PlayStore or AppStore.
  2. Select “Sign up” and fill in your personal details. You will be prompted to give consent and verify mobile number to proceed
  3. Click “Submit” and follow the prompts

Follow these simple steps to sign up through USSD;
  1. Dial *165*80# and select School Fees Loan.
  2. You will be prompted to enter the MTN MoMo PIN and accept Terms and Conditions.
  3. A message is sent to confirm your registration.

    Yes, you can resume your incomplete Mobile App sign-up process within 60 days by clicking “Resume Application” on the Furaha App.
    You'll need to enter some personal verification data, and then an OTP sent to your registered mobile number to proceed.

    How do I apply for School Fees Loan after registration

    To apply for the School Fees Loan, follow these steps below;
    1. Login to the Furaha App
    2. Click “Apply Now”
    3. Enter and verify the details of the child you are paying for
    4. Verify your identity by scanning your National ID and taking a selfie
    5. Select school fees amount using the slider (or consider the school fees balance shown)
    6. Select payment option (either weekly or monthly)
    7. Accept offer

    Follow these simple steps to apply through USSD;
    1. Dial *165*80#
    2. Select School Fees Loan
    3. Select 1 to proceed
    4. Select Take a loan
    5. Enter amount (This should be within the Minimum and Maximum amount)
    6. Select the school fees aggregator and enter student code
    7. Review displayed student details
    8. Select how to pay (Weekly, Monthly)
    Review loan details and confirm to pay school fees

    The minimum loan amount one can access is UGX 400,000 and the maximum loan amount is UGX 3,500,000 subject to internal policies and assessment criteria

    No, you cannot change the repayment frequency of your School Fees Loan once you have successfully applied for and received it; however, you can pay before your scheduled repayment date.

    No. The School Fees loan is based on registered student numbers issued by the school and provided through aggregator partners such as School Pay, PegPay, or SurePay for their fee payments.

    No. You can only have one profile based on your NIN. However, you can opt-out from Mobile number registered on Furaha account and sign-up with a different number linked to your NIN.

    The School Fees loan currently supports children at the Pre-Primary, Primary, and Secondary levels of education. We shall soon add financing options for tertiary universities and postgraduate education.

    You will need to contact your child’s school to obtain the name of aggregator, school code and student registration number.

    Please note that School Fees Loan can only be paid through SchoolPay, SurePay and PegPay at the moment

    During the application for a School Fees Loan, the school fees balance will be displayed once you enter your child’s student registration number.

    If no balances are shown, please get in touch with the school for an update before proceeding with the application.

    The loan approval process is instant.

    If the application is declined, you will be notified of the reason for the rejection. You may apply again after resolving the reason for the rejection.

    No. You cannot edit details of the loan application once you have reviewed and submitted it.

    Simply retake the selfie. However, ensure you are within a well-lit environment while holding the camera in front of you to ensure your full face is captured well.

    What are the eligibility criteria for obtaining a school fees Loan?

    To be eligible for the School Fees Loan, the criteria is as below;
    1. Be a resident of the Republic of Uganda,
    2. Possess a valid Uganda National Identification Card (NIN)
    3. Have active transaction history on Mobile Money wallet registered on your NIN
    4. Have a good financial credit history as per the Credit Reference Bureau

    Loan Eligibility considers multiple sources of information to determine eligibility for the School Fees Loan such as your mobile money transaction activity, credit history based on information from the Credit Reference Bureau, school fees payments history and other AI driven algorithm.

    Once you successfully sign up, we will display your available loan limit for a school fees loan.

    If you are not eligible, the home screen will show your ineligibility status. Should your status change, you will be notified via SMS.

    How do I repay the School Fees Loan?

    Your overdue instalments will be automatically debited from your Mobile Money. You can also make voluntary repayments as follows: Through Furaha App
    1. Login to the Furaha App
    2. Click "Pay" on the selected loan.
    3. Select the payment amount (you can select full payment, next due amount OR other amount)
    4. Click “Next” then “Pay Now”
    5. You are directed to your mobile wallet where you enter you PIN to authorise payment.
    Through USSD Channel
    1. Dial *165*80#
    2. Select School Fees Loan and enter MoMo PIN
    3. Select 1 to proceed
    4. Select Repay loan
    5. Select the repayment option (Due Amount, Full amount or Partial amount)
    6. Enter the amount to repay in case of partial option
    7. Review amount to be debited and confirm
    8. You will receive payment confirmation showing the amount debited from your Mobile Money account and loan balance

    You have the option to make weekly or monthly repayments. However, eligibility for monthly repayments is based on internal policies.

    Yes. You can repay your School Fees Loan from the mobile phone number of the same network.
    1. Login to the Furaha App
    2. Click "Pay" on the selected loan.
    3. Click on “Add Payment Number”
    4. Enter OTP sent to the added number for verification
    5. Once Added, select the preferred payment number from the drop-down list and make payment

    Not at the moment, but this feature is coming soon.

    The school fees loan tenure is three (3) months. (Tenure is the repayment period)

    No. You cannot choose the duration of your loan tenure/repayment period because the school fees loan tenure is fixed to three (3) months.

    No. There are no penalties for early repayment. However, overdue repayments will attract a penalty of 5% on overdue instalment amount.

    Can I view my school fees loan statement?

    Yes, you can view your loan statement at any point by clicking on the "Statements" menu on dashboard screen. You can also access both active and historical loans and download your loan statement.
    From USSD Channel:
    1. Dial *165*80# and select School Fees Loan
    2. Enter MTN MoMo PIN
    3. Select 1 to proceed
    4. Select My Account Information
    5. Select View mini statement

    To view your loan balances: From Furaha App:
    1. Login to Furaha App
    2. On the Dashboard, balances will be displayed
    Click on the loan number to view more details.

    From USSD Channel:
    1. Dial *165*80# and select School Fees Loan
    2. Enter MoMo PIN <
    3. Select 1 to proceed
    4. Select Loan balances.
    (Your loan balances will be displayed)

    KFD is a summary of your current loans. This includes details of the loan amount, student name, school details, charges, repayment installment(weekly/monthly) and the lender.

    To view your Key Fact Summary.
    1. Dial *165*80# and select School Fees Loan
    2. Enter MoMo PIN
    3. Select 1 to proceed
    4. Select My Account Information
    5. Select Key Facts
    To view more details on key facts document, download by the Furaha Mobile App.

    You can only access the Furaha App while overseas when servicing your Existing School Fees Loan
    However, you cannot sign-up or take a new School Fees Loan from Furaha App when outside of Uganda

    To view your personal details;
    1. login to the Furaha Mobile App
    2. select "User"
    3. The click "Personal Details" to view your profile

    Keep calm.
    1. You will need to liaise with your telco services provider to replace your mobile number.
    2. On your new device, download the Furaha app, and enter verification details.
    3. You will now be able to access your existing Furaha profile.

    How do I contact the Furaha?

    How will FURAHA protect my personal data and documents?

    FURAHA prioritizes the security of your personal data and documents. We implement stringent security measures, including encryption, access controls, and regular audits, to safeguard your information from unauthorized access or misuse.

    No. For security reasons, we will only allow you to use FURAHA App on one device. You will be able to disable the app from an old device if you wish to change to a new one.

    If you forget your password, you can reset it on the app while online. Open the FURAHA Mobile App, and select 'Login' > 'Forgot' and provide the authentication responses, then enter the OTP

    Why can't I find the Furaha app on my Google PlayStore or AppStore?

    You could be failing to find the Furaha App in your respective app store due to VPN or Appstore/Playstore registration region. Try the following: 

    1. Turn off the VPN and check the app stores again as the Furaha App is geo-locked to Uganda.
    2. Go to your app store account, change the country to Uganda and search for the Furaha App again.
    Can I take a School Fees Loan for more than one child?

    Yes, Customers may take multiple loans for different children. However, one cannot take additional loan towards a child where an active loan has been booked by any customer Top-up loan can be taken after loan is fully paid

    You can hold up to four (4) active loans simultaneously, if the total borrowed amount remains within their approved credit limit.

    Any new or existing customer with an approved credit limit and available balance is eligible to request a top-up, as long as all top-up loans are taken within the same day, and within available credit limit

    Each additional loan will have a respective processing fee. The interest will be as per the consolidated schedule. You will be able to see the loan consolidation during loan application, on the key facts document, loan statement or Mobile App

    Yes, the initial loan is consolidated with the new loan, resulting in a revised repayment schedule and an updated repayment amount

    The system consolidates all active loans into a single total amount for your convenience, easier tracking and repayment. However, you can still view each loan separately in the Mobile App.

    You can only take a top-up loan on the same calendar date of your loan application. For greater flexibility, we are working on a feature to allow top-up loan in a different date. Coming soon!

    The tenor for the consolidated loan 3 months, which starts counting from the date of the most recent top-up loan. There is no change at the moment since top-up is within the same day.
